Miguel Tineo - Engineering Leader and Cloud Innovator

Building teams that build the future

Head of Engineering at hivenet.com

Leading AI adoption and agentic engineering initiatives

Cagliari, Italy 🌍 Remote-first Leader

My Story

I believe great engineering starts with people. Over the last decade, I've built and scaled teams across the US and Europe, leading initiatives that bridged innovation and culture. At Zendesk, Dutchie, and now Hivenet, I've helped teams grow sustainably—combining mentorship, clarity, and technical excellence.

My journey in technology began with a deep curiosity about distributed systems and cloud architecture. As I progressed in my career, I discovered that the most impactful work wasn't just about building scalable systems—it was about building scalable teams that could tackle increasingly complex challenges.

Today, I'm passionate about helping engineers grow into leaders, fostering cultures of psychological safety and continuous learning, and architecting systems that balance velocity with reliability. Whether it's reducing cloud costs by 20%, scaling services to handle millions of requests, or mentoring junior engineers into senior roles, I focus on measurable impact that serves both people and business outcomes.

Leadership Values

People First

Great systems are built by great teams. I prioritize psychological safety, clear communication, and creating environments where engineers can do their best work.

Sustainable Velocity

Speed matters, but not at the cost of quality or team health. I believe in building systems and processes that enable consistent, sustainable delivery.

Mentorship & Growth

Every engineer deserves a clear path for growth. I invest time in coaching, feedback, and creating opportunities for team members to develop their skills.

Technical Excellence

Strong engineering fundamentals matter. I advocate for code quality, system design best practices, and making architectural decisions that scale.

Current Focus

As Head of Engineering at hivenet.com, I lead 9 teams and 30+ engineers (direct and indirect reports), driving the modernization of our product development process toward a leaner, AI-first delivery model. My mandate spans platform engineering, infrastructure, and the organizational practices that let a distributed team ship reliable software at pace.

My current work sits at the intersection of agentic AI and engineering culture. I'm rolling out AI adoption across engineering— building the patterns, tooling, and guardrails that turn AI from a novelty into a core part of how we design, review, ship, and operate software. The goal is a genuinely AI-first engineering culture where every engineer has agents as collaborators, not curiosities.

Key initiatives I'm leading right now:

  • Agent Orchestration & Optimization: Designing multi-agent workflows, cost and latency optimization, and evaluation harnesses so agentic systems are reliable enough to put in front of real users.
  • AI-First Engineering Culture: Establishing practices, tooling, and enablement programs so every team treats AI-assisted development as the default, not the exception.
  • SOC2 Compliance Initiative: Owning the end-to-end SOC2 program—policies, controls, evidence collection, and the engineering changes required to meet enterprise-grade standards.
  • Enterprise-Readiness: Hardening the platform for enterprise customers—identity, auditability, reliability SLOs, and the operational maturity that larger buyers expect.
  • DORA Metrics Foundation: Laying the measurement groundwork—deployment frequency, lead time, change failure rate, and MTTR—so teams have objective signal to improve on.
  • Data Initiatives: Enabling and rolling out data platform work that unlocks better product decisions, sharper observability, and the training signal our AI systems need.
  • Hiring & Team Design: Growing the engineering org with intent—hiring for leverage, shaping team boundaries, and building a bench that can scale with an AI-first operating model.

Outside of my day job, I write the Bear Essentials newsletter on engineering leadership, speak about distributed teams and AI adoption, and mentor engineers navigating the transition into leadership and AI-augmented workflows.

Beyond Engineering

When I'm not building teams or systems, you'll find me exploring Sardinia's beautiful coastline, experimenting with new technologies, or enjoying good food and wine with family. I'm based in Cagliari, Italy, but work with distributed teams across multiple time zones—proof that great collaboration knows no borders.
